I NEED your help!!

Okay all of you lovely, creative teachers out there! I need some decorating advice!! I have this HUGE, ugly air conditioner in my room and I am desperately trying to figure out a way to disguise it at least a little bit. My wonderful neighboring teacher's theme is owls, and this is what she came up with:

How CUTE is that?!!

This is what I have:

Isn't it sad? :(
My theme is Peace, Love, and First Grade and I would LOVE any ideas to make this cute and 3D!! Please let me know what you think!!

Thank you all!

  1. Frame the blank section with border and use it for a magnet center. Or post your rules, hang a pocket chart etc. Make it work to your advantage rather than trying to hide it. :-)

    1. Good ideas!! I definitely thought about my rules there, because it would be at eye level!! Thank you :)

  2. The first thought that came to the mind of this "Junior Hippy"(I missed the early 60's since I was just a baby...but by the time I was in first and second grade I had tried to organize a sit-in to protest the lunchroom rules, among other things - LOL) was a huge lava lamp. You could probably put up the outline of the lamp and then use colored cellophane to make the "lava". The other idea I had was to make a large boy or girl dressed in tie dye with a headband, long hair, groovy glasses, and of course, a peace sign necklace around his/her neck. Oh yeah...and make sure he/she is barefoot.
    Good Luck!

    1. Love love love those ideas!! I'm a baby hippy! I was born in 89 but I THINK I should have been born in the 60's :) For the lava lamp idea, how do you think I could use the cellophane? By crinkling it up? Or just cutting it in the shape of lava?? And I love the boy/girl hippy idea too! SOOO Cute!! I have got my work cut out for me! You are a pro!

  3. I need to think, but 1 question first - are you allowed to completely cover it?

    1. I can't COMPLETELY cover it, but I can put things down the middle. The air blows out of the very top vent and the intake vent is that one in the middle. I've got to at least leave a little bit of that open!

  4. I might use contact paper and cover it....I like the lava lamp idea. You could do your own tree, but with a hippie spin to it and color peace signs into the trunk....hang birds from the leaves =)

  5. OK, first of all, I am (mock) horrified that you are complaining about your "huge, ugly" AC unit, when we have 90 degree rooms with huge, ugly I-don't-know-whats that suck HOT air from the ROOF and shoot it in our rooms and count that as "ventilation!" :) You have not seen ugly yet--I'll post a pic once we get in our rooms.

I'm thinking you could lightly trace a big peace sign on it, then have your kiddos dip their hands in paint and stamp them along the shape of the peace sign. You could also do a heart shape below the peace sign. That's all I've got right now. :)

  6. Could you turn it into the front of an old VW Van? The intake part could be the window of the van.

  7. I love the lava lamp idea! Something with a big, bright slug bug would be cute too! And a saying like cruising into first grade?

  8. Wow, I thought I had some great ideas, but then I read all of the responses and realized mine have a) already been thought of or b) just really aren't that cool. I love the VW van idea and contact paper! I was thinking modge-podge, but contact paper would definitely be easier. You could also cover it with fabric and make it into a make-shift bulletin board... Good luck! Can't wait to see what you do.

  9. Obviously, I LOVE your theme! I also love the lava lamp and VW Van ideas! It should be pretty easy to turn that into the front of a van. It would certainly change the color, and the van would be fun to decorate! If you search digital clipart on Etsy for words like groovy, hippie, peace, van, etc, a ton of cute clipart will appear. They have some groovy colors, too! I think you'll end up loving it!!

  11. All of these ideas are great! I'm going to throw my 2 cents in cause I have thought about it. Since the other teacher was able to do a tree could you do the same sort of thing but as a droopy peace flower? So where she has the tree trunk, you put the stem, then basically design the rest kinda like that tree but as a flower - daisy maybe. Hope that helps.
